Jürgen Klopp has come to the defense of Virgil van Dijk after Rafael van der Vaart criticized the Netherlands captain. The former Liverpool manager raised questions about Van der Vaart's role as an analyst. Van Dijk faced scrutiny following the Netherlands' opening match at the World Cup against Japan, which ended in a 2-2 draw. Van der Vaart expressed his dismay, suggesting that Van Dijk looked sluggish during Japan's equalizer. 'I must admit I was a bit shocked by Van Dijk. That turning… He was a bit like a Boeing 747. I hope he can turn quicker as the tournament progresses,' Van der Vaart stated during his commentary for NOS. Klopp, who managed Van Dijk at Liverpool from 2018 to 2024, addressed the criticism ahead of the Netherlands' upcoming match against Sweden. 'I don't know if it's even worth mentioning Rafael van der Vaart,' Klopp said on ARD. 'But if he ever says something positive about a player, then I might consider taking him seriously again.' Klopp further criticized Van der Vaart's approach, stating, 'He seems to see something that he has to express in a flowery way, only to then contradict himself. But it’s really not that important,' he concluded, before leaving the matter at that.
